Mechanical Testing

MAG-Pi offers a complete range of mechanical testing services. Our experienced test engineers can help you design custom testing programs to evaluate your products. A well-equipped in-house machine shop provides timely preparation of test specimens or any special fixturing.
  • Tensile Testing - Tensile testing, or tension testing, is used to determine the behaviour of the metal when it is being pulled. Tensile testing can measure yield strength, proof strength and ultimate tensile strength. We have a range of tensile testing machines and can apply loads from a few newtons to 1,000 kilo newtons, and test up to 600°c.
  • Bend Testing - Tests are normally performed on butt welded joints. Either Root and Face bends or Side bends are commonly used, depending upon material thickness.Test specimens are taken transverse to the weld axis, reinforcement is removed to make the specimens flat. Each specimen is placed in the jig and bent 180º over a former, the size of the former is dependent upon the material group.
  • Charpy Impact Testing - The Charpy impact test, also known as the Charpy V-notch test, is a high strain-rate test that involves striking a standard notched specimen with a controlled weight pendulum swung from a set height. The impact test helps measure the amount of energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture.
  • Hardness Testing - MAG-Pi has a special dedicated laboratory along with field operated hardness testers to determine the hardness of any material including all types of alloys.
Trained personnel will choose the best applicable hardness testing method for your needs and generate a detailed report of material capabilities and calculate all necessary precautions crucial for the project.
  • Nick-Break Testing - Along with a number of Non-Destructive services, MAG-Pi also has capabilities to perform and offer Destructive Testing Services such as Nick-Break Test. A very useful test for determining the internal quality of the weld metal. This test reveals various internal defects (if present), such as slag inclusions, gas pockets, lack of fusion, and oxidized or burned metal. Special MAG-Pi technique is developed in house for higher accuracy results.
  • Metallographic Replica - Our clients often require metallurgical evaluations on samples which may not be modified or otherwise "destroyed" for various reasons. In these cases, we perform replication metallography, which is the non-destructive test (NDT) practice of duplicating the microstructure of a component in order to observe grain structure at high magnification.
